Imperialism in the 21st Century: Beyond Pan-African Rhetoric.

The world is at war again, and Africa is being told to pick a side.

The US and Israel bomb and blockade Iran. Yemen’s war has closed the Bab el-Mandeb. Gaza lies in ruins. World military spending hit a record $2.887 trillion in 2025.

In the Sahel, France has been pushed out of Burkina Faso, and pan-Africanists hail Traoré and the turn towards Moscow and Beijing as Africa’s second liberation. Yet the mines still produce for the world market, and the Burkinabè miner still goes home poor.

What is imperialism today? And who is really fighting it?

We will discuss:

What imperialism actually is: monopoly, finance capital and the struggle to redivide the world
Iran, Yemen and Gaza: war over the Middle East and its trade routes
China: a rival to US power, or a new imperialist centre in its own right?
Burkina Faso and the Sahel: can juntas and new foreign patrons free Africa?
Why pan-African rhetoric leaves the African ruling class untouched

Does a new master in Moscow or Beijing free Africa, or does liberation require the working class to take power?
